7/26 UPDATE

LIFTED: Boil Water Notice for impacted South End customers in Burlington is LIFTED

We have received the bacteriological results from the boil water notification area and they indicate that the water meets State and Federal requirements.  You may proceed with normal use and consumption of your tap water.  The boil water notice is lifted.

Updated Front Porch Forum Notice 7/25

On 7/24, due to a private fire service break, areas of our drinking water distribution system in the South End experienced reduced water pressure around 1 pm. While there is no known contamination of the drinking water supply, significant drops in pressure in the water system can potentially lead to the introduction of pathogens. Based on the knowledge that several locations reported full loss of pressure and State guidance, we did issue a boil water notice for a large area of the South End where we understood potential pressure loss to have occurred.

More information, including an interactive map, FAQ's (like how to handle hand-washing, dish-washing, etc) & more can be found at https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/water/Boil-Water-Advisory.

We want to use today's Front Porch Forum to address 3 key things to know about this and future boil water notifications.

1) Please sign up for VT-Alert at burlingtonvt.gov/btv-alerts. Ensure that you've listed any addresses for which you want to receive boil water updates or other information related to public health. This is our primary and fastest way of letting you know about larger-scale urgent issues.

2) Samples were taken today in the affected parts of the South End distribution system. We expect results back by tomorrow (7/26) early afternoon. If your water continues to meet Federal & State water quality requirements, then we will be able to lift this boil water notice. We will use VT-Alert, the website and social media as our initial means of communication.

3) We test for bacteria daily at the drinking water plant and at different sites around the City 50 times per month to ensure it meets Federal & State water quality requirements.

Please email water-resources@burlingtonvt.gov with any questions, or for timely questions, please call 802-863-4501.

Updated Customer Notice 7:10 PM 7/24 -

We have updated our boil water map based on guidance from the State and the extent of customer reports. With guidance from the State, we are required to advise all customers within this area to follow boil water protocols – regardless of if you experienced no pressure, low pressure or believe that your property maintained pressure around the approximate 1 PM private fire service break.

The boil water notice will be in effect until sample results show that your water continues to meet State & Federal requirements. We anticipate being able to submit samples for testing on 7/25 with results expected back by Friday 7/26 in the early afternoon. We will provide an update on the website, VT Alert and social media.

For urgent questions, call 802 863-4501. As we expect a large volume of calls, please email water-resources@burlingtonvt.gov with questions that are less timely
