Emergency Medical Services
The Burlington Fire Department operates a two-tiered EMS response system. The closest engine company responds with the ambulance on most calls. All of the engine companies are staffed with firefighters cross-trained as emergency medical technicians, and are equipped with advanced life support equipment. This system provides an engine company on the scene within three minutes and an ambulance on the scene within five minutes.By utilizing our firefighters in this manner, we are able to deliver patient care quickly and efficiently.
The Burlington Fire Department operates two fully staffed ambulances.Rescue One operates out of Downtown's Central Fire Station and Rescue Two operates out of the Old North End's Fire Station Two. A third ambulance is stationed at Fire Station Four in the New North End, but is not manned. When Rescue Three is needed, the crew of Engine Four leaves the engine parked in the station and responds with Rescue Three. All of these ambulances operate at the EMT-Intermediate level.
There are over 5000 requests for an ambulance in the City of Burlington each year. The addition of a second fully staffed ambulance in the fall of 2002 has enabled the Burlington Fire Department to provide a more consistent service to the community.
In addition to its permanent residents, Burlington is home to industry, several colleges and a thriving retail center. There are a large number of commuters who come to Burlington to learn, to work and to play.Mindful of the present and future needs of the people we serve, the Burlington Fire Department will continue striving to provide the community with the best possible pre-hospital care.
