Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license
- EMT Certification (NREMT, VT or Equivalent)
- Valid CPAT certification obtained no more than 12 months prior to time of application. Not required at time of application, but due by May 6th, 2024.
Application Process:
Listed below is the anticipated timeline for the current hiring process. The timeline is subject to change.
Application Due Date: February 29th, 2024
Written Exam: March 8th, 2024 & March 9th, 2024. The written exam will be an online Entry-Level Firefighter Test consisting of 100 questions. Offered at the same time will be a Work Styles Inventory (WSI) Test consisting of 85 questions. The WSI predicts job perfomance related to applicable fire service criteria. The online test requires access to a laptop or desktop computer. Applicants will pay a $35 fee to take the exam. Applicants experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to submit an email request for financial aid to bfdadmin@burlingtonvt.gov. Likewise, applicants who are unable to access a laptop or desktop computer are requested to submit a request for accommodation via email to bfdadmin@burlingtonvt.gov.

Our firefighters work a unique 48/96 shift schedule, meaning 48 hours on and 96 hours off. Starting salary for an entry-level firefighter is $58,514 base pay with an additional 4% for Advanced EMT and 10% for Paramedic certifications.
