We will be building 13 separate rain gardens (some with additional subsurface structures) to slow storm flows and filter out pollutants. These projects are being built with grant-funding at no cost to the ratepayer. Each generation of Burlingtonians has made significant progress in reducing their footprint on Lake Champlain. The Clean Water Resiliency Plan (CWRP) - approved by over 90% of voters in 2018 - is our effort to reinvest in and upgrade our aging infrastructure, and use best practices to combat the effects of and become more resilient to climate change. These 6 projects were planned under the CWRP with years of careful planning, sound engineering and design, using a best practices approach to managing stormwater in the 21st century. Collectively, these projects will manage nearly 6 acres of stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces, and help mitigate the most challenging of the few remaining Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) points in Burlington.
Here's a map of the GSI projects - highlighted in green - we have planned this year in the South End.
