SIDEWALKS

In 2016, the City of Burlington proposed the Sustainable Infrastructure Plan (SIP) – overwhelmingly approved by voters – which sought to rebuild core assets, including neighborhood infrastructure. Under the SIP roughly 17 miles of Burlington’s sidewalk network has been reconstructed, resulting in an average of 3 miles of sidewalk replaced annually. The original SIP bond funding for sidewalk work concluded with FY21 but was enhanced by voters to continue this level of funding through FY25. Our initial focus had been on "long-run" sidewalk segments that require repair - as identified under a 2014 sidewalk assessment. With community feedback and enhanced engineering support, we have identified dozens of "short-run" repairs since 2020 moving forward, in addition to long-runs. You can see our workplan in the Sidewalk Dashboard below (this may take a minute to load).

We also recently undertook a new sidewalk network assessment to help us continue proactively planning our sidewalk workplans. Check back for more information on this assessment as it is finalized.
