What does a Working Bridges Resource Coordinator (RC) do?

The RC is on-site and available to employees to help navigate community resources and provide assistance in overcoming work-life challenges that cause personal and family stress. A Resource Coordinator is a certified Community Resource Specialist (CRS), financial coach, and recovery coach who can reduce barriers in order to support employees’ productivity and minimize work disruptions.

Examples of Issues the Resource Coordinator can help with:

Transportation, housing, legal issues, caregiver support, childcare, budgeting, debt, credit issues, substance use, mental health, domestic violence, food insecurity. Any and all things unrelated to work, although we can provide referrals to workplace resources (HR, EAP, union representatives, etc.).

Best Practices:

  • Appointments are scheduled during work hours at a time approved by a supervisor or during break times. Meetings are typically 15-30 minutes but can be longer as needed.
  • The RC is on-site at City of Burlington 6-hours per week and is available by phone and email  for remote meetings. Their time will be divided between visiting sites and a homebase in the Human Resources office. Designated time at other sites can be arranged as needed.
  • The RC provides outreach to staff through bulletin boards and staff meetings for self-referrals.
  • Working Bridges offers on-site programs such as supervisor/manager trainings, resource information each month, and connection with community partners.

Triggers for Referrals to the RC from Supervisors/Managers or Human Resources:

  • Increase in unscheduled time off or tardiness
  • Taking breaks to make or receive phone calls
  • Quality of work suddenly decreasing
  • Concerns about money, family or other non-work related issues that are causing employees to be less productive than usual
  • Issues that supervisors feel are beyond their ability to navigate
  • Employee expresses need for information about a life goal such as buying a house, adopting a child, saving up for a new car, etc.

Confidentiality:

  • Meetings with employees are confidential unless an employee signs an authorization for the Resource Coordinator to advocate/speak on their behalf.
  • The RC does not get involved in work-related issues and will direct such cases to management, Human Resources and/or EAP.
  • RCs are trained in mental health first aid but are not mental health clinicians and will support employees navigating mental health resources through an EAP and/or community mental health agencies.
