Weinberger Invites Community to “Celebrate Burlington” Event:
Herb Bloomenthal, Peter Clavelle, and New Specially-Named Awards to be Announced;
15-Year Anniversary of Community Justice Center to be Celebrated

Burlington, VT – Mayor Miro Weinberger today announced and encouraged public attendance at the upcoming “Celebrate Burlington” event to be held this Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 5:00-7:00pm in City Hall’s Contois Auditorium.  The City of Burlington will continue its annual tradition of recognizing through special awards staff and community members who help build stronger, safer communities.  Also, the City will be celebrating the 15-year anniversary of the Community Justice Center of the Community and Economic Development Office.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the neighbors, community partners, and City staff who make Burlington a great place to live, work, and play,” said Weinberger.  “I look forward to congratulating our honorees who have contributed significantly to the fabric of our community.  I am proud that our Community Justice Center was the first in Vermont, has served as a model for many programs across the country, and is an integral part of meeting one of my priorities as Mayor – improving public safety.”

The “Celebrate Burlington” event will feature an evening of food, fun, and awards, as well as recognize the important work done to keep our communities safe, vibrant, and green. This year, in addition to the annually presented Peter Clavelle and Herb Bloomenthal awards, a new award will be named and presented to a leader who has made great contributions toward advancing community justice in Burlington.

The Community Justice Center, Vermont’s first, was founded during the Administration of Mayor Peter Clavelle and since has grown to encompass Restorative Justice Panels, Parallel Justice for Victims of Crime, Offender Reentry Services, and Graffiti Removal.  The event also will include a preview of the Diversity and Equity Strategic Plan, recognition of the Neighborhood Planning Assemblies that have been shaping neighborhood concerns for 30 years, Burlington’s continued efforts toward sustainability, and remarks from the Mayor.
