Mayor Miro Weinberger Urges City Council to Pass 8-4-12 Redistricting Plan

Earlier today, Mayor Miro Weinberger sent the following email to the members of the City Council, urging them to pass the compromise 8-4-12 plan at tonight’s City Council meeting:

Councilors -

As a City, we’ve been debating a Constitutionally-required redistricting plan for nearly 1.5 years.  In that time, the City has spent tens of thousands of dollars in staff time developing dozens of potential maps, producing legal analyses, writing charter change language, and completing related work.   It is time for the City Council to pass a redistricting plan tonight and send it to the voters.  A failure to do so would, for a second year in a row, disenfranchise Burlington voters on this issue, render much of the enormous effort to date wasted, and result in considerable further distraction from our core municipal responsibilities.

I urge the Council to pass the compromise 8-4-12 plan tonight and put it before the voters, and then unite in support of that plan at the ballot box in March so that we can move forward as a City government and focus on our many pressing challenges and the work of making Burlington an even greater City.

I feel it is  important that the public understand my position on this matter and thus will be sharing this e-mail with the media shortly.

Warmly,

Miro
