Mayor Miro Weinberger Statement in Response to Unanimous City Council Vote Authorizing Sale of Brown’s Court Parking Lot to Champlain College

“After many years of uncertainty about the future of the Brown’s Court parking lot, tonight’s unanimous adoption by the Council of the agreement my Administration negotiated with Champlain College is an important step toward increased housing affordability, better neighborhood quality of life, and improved City finances.”

Key elements of the deal include:

  • City to receive $1.1 million for above market-rate sale (on appraised value of $1,025,000)
  • Estimated additional annual property taxes of approximately $400,000
  • Preservation of 38 public parking spaces in underground garage
  • Approximately 300 new student beds
  • Reduction of student impact on residential neighborhoods
  • Ground floor retail, adding to vitality of St. Paul Street

Statement relates to City Council Meeting agenda items 7 and 7.01, which can be found here (below Local Control Commission agenda).
