CEDO to Celebrate 30th Anniversary

Burlington, VT – What do the Community Boathouse, Champlain Housing Trust, Burlington Bike Path, Dealer.Com, and City Market all have in common?  These are just a few examples of how the City’s Community & Economic Development Office (CEDO) has helped earn Burlington a place among the nation’s top small cities.

On Friday, September 20, 2013, CEDO will celebrate 30 years of working with the community to make Burlington a vibrant and thriving place to live, work, and play.  The celebration will be held in City Hall’s Contois Auditorium from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Mayor Miro Weinberger will join the celebration and share his thoughts about the important contributions CEDO has made and outline his goals as CEDO moves forward.

“CEDO has a proud history,” stated Mayor Miro Weinberger.  “The agency has been at the center of the waterfront and downtown development successes for the past three decades and is central to the community, economic development, housing, and anti-poverty efforts my Administration is now pursuing.  I appreciate the hard work of CEDO team members past and present and look forward to continued CEDO successes for our City.”

In 1983, then-Mayor Bernie Sanders created CEDO to “aggressively address the issues of economic development and job creation, neighborhood revitalization, housing, the waterfront and the securing of state and federal grants.”

U.S. Senate schedule permitting, Senator Sanders also will join the celebration and reflect back on the creation of CEDO and its important role in moving the City forward these past three decades.

CEDO Director Peter Owens stated: “This event will give us a moment to pause and acknowledge a legacy of accomplishments over the last 30 years and to renew our shared commitment to the community goals that CEDO was created to achieve.”

In conjunction with this Friday’s celebration, a CEDO exhibit titled, “Celebrating 30 years of Community Collaborations,” now is featured in the Metropolitan Art Gallery on the second floor of City Hall and will remain until September 27, 2013.  The exhibit highlights various prominent community projects that have changed the social, economic, and physical fabric of Burlington.
