The Burlington Legacy Project: Partnering for a Sustainable Future

Ten years ago, hundreds of Burlington residents developed a shared vision for Burlington as a desirable place to live, work and play. This plan – the Burlington Legacy Plan – continues to express our shared belief that by working together on initiatives ranging from business development to transportation to housing and environmental health, we can ensure a thriving city for our children and our children’s children.

Unlike many other communities with “sustainability” plans, our Legacy Plan understands that a thriving tomorrow cannot be built solely on economic vitality or environmental health. Legacy reflects our understanding of the nexus between the 4 Es – Equity and diversity, Economics, Education and Environment – and demonstrates our understanding that a healthy community must consider job growth and creation, housing, transportation, quality schooling, environmental health, and the importance of reaching out to engage as many voices as possible.

The Legacy Project is a partnership effort aimed to bring the  Legacy Plan to life. You can see how we're doing by reviewing the 2010 Report Card.

Share Your Vision:

Sustainability. It means something different to everyone. What does it mean to you? Tell us what you care about! Share your vision here. And visit My Vision to see what others are thinking about.

Help Us Celebrate:

A key component of the Legacy Project is ongoing community input and feedback on bringing the 2030 Plan to life.  This happens at the annual Legacy Town Meeting, where we check in with the community, celebrate our successes and honor the Peter Clavelle Award winner.  This Award recognizes an individual whose efforts have helped make Burlington a better place to live, work and play.  If you know a professional whose leadership has advanced social equity, environmental stewardship, quality education, or economic growth and vitality in Burlington, please consider nominating them for this annual Award.  Click here for more information about the nomination process.  Learn more about the Peter Clavelle Award here.

ECOS Partnership

The Burlington Legacy Project is a partner in the Chittenden Regional Planning Commission’s ECOS Project. ECOS stands for Environment, Community, Opportunity and Sustainability. The project is funded by a $1 million grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Sustainable Communities Project. Over a three year span, ECOS will work on community development and will also initiate sustainable practices in our community. You can visit the ECOS project here.  With the support of ECOS, we will update the Legacy Plan.   HUD Grant Partners Featured on CCTV :: Live at 5:25
