Fingerprinting

Fingerprinting is conducted on site here at One North Avenue on Mondays only, between 8:30am - 4:30pm by appointment only.

Please contact our Uniform Bureau Support & Administrative Coordinator, Sarah Trieb at (802) 540-2246 or by email strieb@bpdvt.org to make an appointment.

  • The cost is $25 per fingerprint card – exact cash only (we are unable to make change)

  • Please be sure to bring a government issued photo identification document (ID)

  • We do not provide rolled ink fingerprint cards

  • Our fingerprints are done in digital format – they are sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) electronically, or we can print them out and you can take them with you

We typically book 2 weeks out. If you need fingerprinting sooner, please consider contacting another local police agency.

How do I make an appointment with the Burlington Police Department?

How much does it cost?

  • $25 (cash fee, exact change only)

What should I bring with me?

  • A government issued photo identification document (ID) and a secondary card/ID with your name on it

What paperwork do I need?

Are you being fingerprinted for a Vermont-based organization?

(School district, VT nursing license, childcare, fire department, coaching, etc.)

  • Fingerprint Authorization Certificate (FAC)

    • Whoever is requesting you to be fingerprinted should provide you with this document

    • It should be printed on the letterhead of their organization and be signed by their agency staff member

Are you being fingerprinted for an out-of-state organization?

(Immigration, gun licensing, international visas, nursing licenses in other states, etc.)

  • No paperwork is needed

After I am fingerprinted, what will I be sent home with?

Vermont-Based

(Applicants who came with a Fingerprint Authorization Certificate)

  • A receipt from the Police Department

    • Whoever sent you to be fingerprinted may need a copy of it for proof

Out-of-state Applicants

  • A receipt from the Police Department for your records

  • FD-258 fingerprint card(s)

    • This will need to be sent to whomever is performing your background check

    • Out-of-state fingerprint applications are not conducted through the Vermont Crime Information Center (VCIC) and need to be sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or whatever agency your requesting agency uses to perform background checks

    • The Police Department has no knowledge of where your fingerprints need to be sent

I do not know if my fingerprints are in-state or out-of-state, what do I do?

I need to send my fingerprints to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), how do I do that?
