Milestones

What’s been achieved as a result of the Open Space Protection Plan?

  • Mapping of open space lands and a delineation of significant natural areas.

  • Creation of the Recreation, Conservation, Open space land use zones and the Natural Resource Protection Overlays and associated regulatory standards for development within those areas.

  • Establishment of the Conservation Legacy Program and associated acquisition fund. The Conservation Legacy Fund, started in 2005, has been used to conserve three properties.  The fund balance accrues on a yearly basis.

  • Creation of a Land Steward position within the Department of Parks and Recreation. In 2005 Lisa Coven was hired as the first Land Steward, serving through 2010. In January 2011, Dan Cahill was hired to replace Lisa. The Land Steward is responsible for managing the Community Garden program, managing open space lands and acquisitions, and assisting with special projects within Park Operations.

  • Conservation of woodland adjacent to Centennial Woods, wetlands, woodlands, and prime agricultural lands in the Intervale, and the Avant Garden community garden.
