The Burlington Fire Department currently operates three ambulances staffed with Firefighter/EMTs and Firefighter/Paramedics. Each ambulance is assigned two firefighters capable of providing advanced life-support, emergency medicine, tactical medicine, and mass-casualty incident care. All members are cross-trained to assist with engine and ladder company operations on the fire ground. Some members have additional training in Technical Rescue, Urban Search and Rescue, and Swift Water Rescue.
The three Burlington Fire ambulances ran 7140 emergency 911 calls in 2022, transporting patients to The University of Vermont Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- Ambulance 1 operates out of Fire Station Number 1 - the Downtown's Central Fire Station
- Ambulance 2 operates out of Fire Station Number 2 - the Old North End's Fire Station
- Ambulance 4 operates out of Fire Station Number 4 - the New North End's Fire Station Four
We use proximity dispatching for medical emergencies, sending the closest ambulance and a fire suppression unit for immediate care during a 911 call. This tiered response system provides an engine or ladder company on the scene within three minutes and an ambulance on the scene within five minutes. All companies and members can provide advanced life support, emergency medical services, and fire suppression.
