DPW’s Fall Leaf Pickup Picks Up Next Week!

Don’t forget to ‘Adopt-A-Drain’ while you’re outside

Resident-driven initiatives contribute to a cleaner environment and a healthier city

Burlington, VT - Burlington’s Department of Public Works (DPW) kicks off its annual Fall Leaf Pickup Program next week. From November 13-17, DPW crews will be collecting bagged leaves on regular recycling days. Be sure to use a biodegradable bag (such as paper) and set your leaves out with your recycling by 7am on your normal recycling day. Leaves will be transported to Green Mountain Compost (https://cswd.net/chittenden-county-solid-waste-facilities/green-mountain-compost), for composting. Last year, Burlington residents composted over 300 tons of leaves!

While the annual leaf pickup program helps keep our streets clear and clean, it also contributes to a healthier environment by limiting nutrient runoff which can lead to cyanobacterial blooms (‘blue-green’ algae outbreaks) in Lake Champlain. DPW also runs a Stormwater Program, started in 2009, which looks to meet and exceed federal and state stormwater permitting requirements, addresses nutrient runoff, and implements other best practices for stormwater management. One of our stormwater initiatives is the Adopt-A-Drain Program, https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/ADOPT-A-DRAIN. Residents have a chance to ‘adopt’ nearby storm-drains, name them and take the initiative to clear them of leaves and other debris.

Our Annual Fall Leaf Pickup and Adopt-A-Drain programs offer a great opportunity for residents to join us in clearing our city of leaves and debris,” said Chapin Spencer, Director of Public Works. “Through our resident’s efforts and DPW’s work, we all get to do our part in cleaning up the city, keeping our Lake and local waterways clean and contributing to a healthier environment.”
