CROSSWALKS

Crosswalks are an essential tool in transportation planning. After a thorough analysis of sight-lines, crossing distance, auto and pedestrian traffic and lighting, our team determines if a crosswalk "treatment" is required and designs one that safely helps pedestrians cross a street. This can range from accessible curb ramps to traditional striping across a road to a more expensive) treatment -- the rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs).

Even traditional crosswalks need a thorough analysis and can still cost in the thousands of dollars, which is why coordinating these with other planned work is most cost effective for the taxpayer. Regardless, we maintain a thorough list of resident and engineer initiated requests for new or enhanced crossings that may qualify for and need some level of pedestrian improvement. We are constantly evaluating capital planning to ensure we can install or enhance as many crosswalks as possible -- once it is determined that one is required.

SEE CLICK FIX: CROSSWALK REQUESTS & SIDEWALK ISSUES

We take dozens of crosswalk and sidewalk requests a year. See Click Fix is the best way to submit these - see the reporting map below. After entering the address or intersection, choose "Transportation & Parking Improvement Request" as your category for crosswalks or "Sidewalk" as your category for sidewalk reports. You can also call 802-863-9094 or email dpw-pinecustomerservice @ burlingtonvt (dot) gov to make these reports.
