Toter FAQ's

Recycling ordinance changes have been approved by City Council. Please refer to the continually updated FAQ's below to help you plan your toter purchase. Visit https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/Recycling/toter-changes to learn more about these changes or apply for a toter today.

How do I get a new cart?

While they are currently not required until May 1, you can always visit https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/Recycling/toter-changes to fill out an application now and get your toter early. If they go out of stock, you'll be added to the wait list.

How do I pay if I prefer not to use a credit card?

You can either mail in payment to DPW 645 Pine St Burlington VT 05401, or come down between 7am and 4pm Monday through Friday.

What are the dimensions of the various toters?

Approximate sizes

35 Gal. -  H = 37.5” W = 19” D = 23.75”

65 Gal. – H = 44” W = 25” D = 27.5”

95 Gal. – H = 46” W = 26” D = 34”

A large cart may be unwieldy. What if I have mobility challenges?

We want to help. Please call 802-863-9094 or send an email to dpw-pinecustomerservice@burlingtonvt.gov and we will work with you to try to find a solution.

What should I do with my old blue recycling bin?

If you can't find another use for it, you can drop them off at the CSWD Drop Off Center at 339 Pine St on Thursdays & Saturdays business hours. Visit cswd.net for hours and details. You can also let us know when we deliver your cart that you'd like to get rid of your bin and we'll take it for you!

They're also useful. Feel free to use them to collect recycling inside and carry it to your cart outside. They also make handy storage for gardening or other projects around the house.

I self haul. Am I required to purchase a recycling toter?

No! Only Burlington residents who wish to use our recycling services are required to own a pre-approved cart.

I'm a renter. Do I need to purchase a toter?

Your landlord is required to provide at least one 65G recycling cart for every 3 units (or less) within their property. If you have questions about landlord responsibilities, please call the Department of Permitting & Inspections at 802-863-0442.

I already own a toter. Can I use that one instead?

Alternative toters must be blue, have a lift-bar that is compatible with our trucks' lift mechanism, be on wheels and have a hinged cover. If you choose to use a different toter and our crews determine that your toter is not compatible or not compliant, they will leave a sticker on your toter letting you know.

I prefer the other shade of blue you offer. Can I have that one?

The shade of blue we offer will vary based on current inventory which changes based on supplier. We do not offer toter swaps due to color.
