Burlington Small Business Grants

What is the Burlington Small Business Grant Program?

The Burlington Small Business Grant Program is funded through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds provided by the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the City of Burlington. Burlington is dispersing these funds to local businesses hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The grants will be awarded for up to $5,000 and can be used for certain eligible expenses. Applicants may fill out the online application and provide supporting documents to be considered for the grant. The City started accepting applications August 26th, and the deadline has now been extended through September 23rd

Who is Eligible?

Businesses where:

  • They are for-profit, located in the City of Burlington which have a brick and mortar location
  • They have 5 or fewer full-time equivalent employees at the time of applying
  • The applicant is 51% + majority owner of the business
  • The owner/applicant is a qualified low/moderate income household OR business commits to retain at least one FTE job held by a low/moderate income household
  • The owner/applicant has or will have a valid SS #, EIN & DUNS number by September 25th, 2020
  • The owner/applicant is not currently in bankruptcy
  • The owner/applicant is current with property taxes and City fees, or has a payment plan in place with City as of March 30, 2020
  • They are current on terms of existing City financial assistance products as of March 30, 2020

What is a DUNS Number?

DUNS stands for Data Universal Numbering System, and this is a unique nine digit identification number for each physical location of your business. The DUNS number is assigned by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) for FREE. This number is required to register with the US Federal government for contracts or grants. Since this grant program is funded by the federal funds, we require this information for businesses receiving assistance. CLICK HERE to request your DUNS number via the web. If one does not exist for your business location, it can be created within 1 business day through the online application. What are the Eligible Expenses for Applicants Who Receive Awards?

Money received from the grant program must go towards:

  • Business rent
  • Payroll
  • Retrofitting for COVID-19 related improvements (such as plexiglass barriers)
  • Working capital
  • Utilities

You will be asked to attach additional documents in the online form. The additional information and forms you will need to upload in this application are:

  • Check if your business is within the purple highlighted Neighborhood Strategy Area
  • Completed W-9 form
  • Self-certified statement regarding COVID related loss of income showing at least $5000
  • Business certification from the State of Vermont or documentation of your business EIN
  • 2018 and 2019 personal tax returns for the business owner
