Making Space for Restaurant and Retail Recovery

Now accepting applications for 2021

To continue Burlington's effort to help the community recover during the pandemic, Mayor Weinberger asked the Resource & Recovery Center, Public Works and the Church Street Marketplace to lead a multi-department initiative to develop expedited, low-cost strategies for businesses and residents to enjoy getting outside this past summer. The Making Space initiative allowed businesses to comfortably expand into the right-of-way, and Burlingtonians to safely enjoy their summer outside. While expanded street seats and the Open Streets events have wrapped up this year, the grab & go pickup zones will continue throughout this winter heading into 2021.

Public health, public safety, economic recovery and helping Burlingtonians stay connected have guided this work.

The Making Space Initiative Has 3 Parts:

Building on DPW's successful Street Seat pilot in 2019 and roll-out of an expanded program in 2020, DPW and Church Street Marketplace have worked with the business community on an expedited, low-cost way to expand dining options and retail onto the greenbelt during the warmer months of 2021. See the guide below for more information on the program, design standards and the encumbrance application.
With pick-up options increasingly popular during this period of social distancing, we want to give businesses and residents the space they need. We will be working with the business community to determine where temporary, short term parking can be placed to allow safe, efficient pick-up of Burlington's excellent cuisine and retail. If you are a business looking to have short term parking added nearby, please email DPW Engineer Phillip Peterson
To allow even more outdoor dining and shopping, select streets were opened to residents and businesses and closed to cars during the summer of 2020. Learn more at https://www.openstreetsbtv.com/
