How to Request a Property Valuation Appeal Hearing to the Board of Assessors

If you are aggrieved by the new valuation of your property, you can meet with the Board of Assessors property appeal meeting. You can schedule this hearing in one of three ways:

  • Online: To request your hearing online, visit https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/Assessor/Property-Value-Grievance-Application. The hearings take about 10 minutes; please be prepared to highlight the reasons for your appeal, such as a recent appraisal, and be prepared to provide helpful information relating to the valuation of your property.
  • Mail: Lastly, if you don’t have a phone or a reliable computer, you can submit a letter requesting a hearing before the Board of Assessors to the City Assessor’s Office. The letter should include reasons for the appeal of the property value and owner’s opinion of value, and it should be signed the property owner. The letter should also include: owner of record, mailing address, email address (if available), phone number (if available), Parcel ID#, and property location. Please mail the letter to the Burlington Assessor’s Office at City Hall, 149 Church Street, Burlington VT 05401.

Property appeal hearings will be held in May during business hours from 9:00 AM to 4:00  PM.

Please note that the deadline to submit a Grievance Application form or letter of grievance is: April 30, 2021 by 4:00 PM.

The Board of Assessor decision letters will be mailed at the end of June. Property owners whom have appealed their property value to the Board of Assessors will have 14 days from the mailing date on the letter to appeal their property value to the Board of Tax Appeals.

Please do not call the Burlington Assessor’s Office for a property valuation grievance hearing. For property owners not contesting the valuation, but who would like to have a data error corrected or ask other questions, please contact the Burlington Assessor’s Office.
