Mayor Miro Weinberger Statement Regarding School Budget
“One week from now, the School Board is expected to present its new proposed budget to the City Council. During their work this week, I encourage the School Board members to consider matters that go beyond the vital task of presenting a balanced budget that ensures educational quality for our children and responds to the Town Meeting Day vote. The pattern of problems with the School District's finances is unacceptable and has continued for too long. I appreciate the strong work of both the new School Board Chair Patrick Halladay and new Finance Committee Chair Miriam Stoll in recent weeks, as well as the resolve of the other members of the new Board. However, the Board must do more to guarantee to the public and City officials that the failures of the past will not continue. As one step towards restoring public confidence, I have offered to the School Board to provide additional City financial oversight and look forward to discussing with the Board the most effective way to structure this.”
