City Council

Divestment Committee

The Divestment Committee was created through a City Council Resolution on December 1, 2014 and is charged to:

  1. Produce a feasibility study examining the costs, benefits and means of divesting Burlington’s public funds from the top 200 fossil fuel companies (also known as the Carbon Underground 200), as identified by the Fossil Free Index; and include the analysis of various independent financial experts
  2. Research other municipalities’ Divestment Policies, recommend to the Burlington  City Council a City Divestment Policy to include measurable criteria, and then use the approved policy and criteria to analyze divestment of fossil fuel.
  3. Hold a public forum on this important issue in an effort to more fully appreciate the community's perspective on fossil fuel divestiture.
  4. Report back at regular intervals to the Retirement Board and City Council, culminating in an advisory report to the Retirement Board (or if the recommendations involve other public funds, to the Council) in December of 2015.

DIVESTMENT COMMITTEE PUBLIC FORUM: On Wednesday, February 3, 5:30-7:00, in Contois Auditorium, members of the Committee hosted a public forum in City Hall to discuss: 1) the Committee’s process, deliberations and what they’ve learned thus far; 2) the City Council-approved criteria; and 3) where the Burlington Employee Retirement System (BERS) Board’s stands regarding possible next steps on pension investment.  The meeting began with an introduction (5:30-5:45), continued with a presentation by the Committee (5:45-6:15), and concluded with a public forum for the community to share their comments, questions, thoughts and ideas (6:15-7:00).  The presentation is posted below.
