Sidewalks
Sidewalk infrastructure is provided along approximately 85% of City streets. New sidewalk infrastructure is planned and prioritized using the Transportation Plan and Sidewalk Strategic Plan. While sidewalk repairs are funded through the City's annual sidewalk capital program, new sidewalk is often funded through grant awards.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Following the recommendations of the Cliff Street Mobility Study, the City applied for and was awarded a Sidewalk Program grant from the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization (CCMPO) to construct a sidewalk along Cliff Street between Willard and Prospect Streets.
At the Public Works Commission meeting of March 11, 2009, a combination of two design alternatives, Alternatives 2 and 4, from the Cliff Street Mobility Study were approved as the preferred design. Click here to view the design, which includes:
- Retain the existing curb and street alignment along Cliff Street between South Willard Street and Summit Ridge, constructing a sidewalk along the northern edge of the City's right-of-way and following the existing footpath.
- Remove on street parking to construct new curb, new sidewalk, and a new greenbelt of varying width within the existing right-of-way on the northern side of Cliff Street between Summit Ridge and Summit Street.
- Retain the existing curb and street alignment along Clif Street between Summit Street and South Prospect Street, constructing a sidewalk and a greenbelt of varying width within the northern edge of the City's right-of-way.
- Remove on street parking, shift the centerline to the west, and construct a new sidewalk and curb along the east side of South Willard Street between Cliff Street and Deforest Road
