Recycling

HISTORY

Since 1992, recycling for residences and businesses in Burlington has been mandatory. The Department of Public Works provides curbside recycling collection for all residential properties, while private haulers provide recycling service for commercial properties and businesses. Our recycling crew makes between 1,000 and 1,500 stops per day with a fleet of 3 trucks operating five days a week. The recycling program enables the diversion of approximately 5,940,000 pounds, or 440 pounds per household, of recycling per year.

BINS, CONTAINERS, & COLLECTION
Blue bins for curbside collection are provided at no cost and may be picked up at the DPW office at 645 Pine Street between 8 am - 4:30 pm or at the CSWD Drop-Off Center at 339 Pine Street during hours of operation.

Property owners can now purchase wheeled toters for curbside recycling pick up. Toters must be wheeled out to the curb by 7:00 am on your recycling day, unless otherwise approved by DPW. Please note that toters may be removed by DPW if they are repeatedly contaminated with non-recyclables. To receive a toter, submit a completed application and DPW staff will follow up to schedule pick up or delivery, and to confirm approval of your application. Toters are generally not available immediately, but need to be assembled up to one week in advance.

  • If you own or manage a residential property with 4 or more units please use this application.
  • If you own or manage a residential property with 3 or fewer units please use this application

To prevent windblown litter, please place heavier recyclables on the top of your blue bins and/or stack the bins.
